If you want total security, don't go on the Internet at all.
But, since this is obviously not a solution, I recommend the #1 most useful tool of all time:
Education
If a person with no computer knowledge manages to go on your computer, he can pretty much mess it up beyond belief. Probably most people here would not go randomly clicking on email attachments that say "FREE GIFT!" (I hope so) but would his/her friends/family/relatives? The simple answer is to teach them not to. One can use MSIE with the latest Windows updates behind a router and not get anything. In fact, most "viruses" do not exploit vulnerabilities, they exploit people's minds or general lack of computer knowledge. It's called "social engineering".
Back to the topic: F-Secure comes with my Internet provider. It's fast, takes 1/3 of Norton's memory, and is one of the first to scan rootkits (too complicated to explain in this post, which has already gotten very long). NOD32 is also very light.
