Well start with something simple so you can start promoting your comics.
Later on you should improve your design, maybe add some features like members, shop, forum.
Somethings to get some members and let them stay

Adding a forum is a good way to go You could go for a payed service : http://vbulletin.com or http://www.invisionpower.com/community/board/index.html . Thier both good, invision power board and vbulletin. You can use a free forum service here: http://www.mybboard.net/ or http://www.phpbb.com/ .

You can additionaly use a CMS, which is really easy to add content. CMS = Content Managment system, i reccomend; http://joomla.com or http://phpnuke.org/ .

    Good luck on your website

Another CMS to recommend, that is easier than Joomla to set up, at least I think is Drupal from www.drupal.org & has a very active support forums, in case one needs help to install or customize one's site.
Although self made site has its advantages, unlike it, using a CMS not not necessarily require one having to learn programming, though it's always an advantage if one can has some basic html knowledge, better still php, etc.
