hi i was wondering if anyone knows of an script that would let me edit text files on a server.... such as .htpasswd files or group files so i can add users to directories

Take a look at PHP's filesystem extension; you might find what you need there.

if you have control over the file
or the files has a 666 CHMOD
then it should be able to be edited.
using the PHP file() function and similars

For security reasons... I won't recommend editing files through webpages. Consider using Authentication by MySQL.
