I just found this great tutorial for making Mambo components, actually it is on Mamboserver, so some of you may have seen it before but I think it would be helpful to some. I haven't finished reading it, but I plan to.

Make sure to use the latest release of mambo or joomla. Our company web server just got hack trough mambo... lot of index got defaced.
For stability and workability linux is the best for it, but be ready
for a bit of a "culture shock" going to linux, it has a stiff learning
curve, but the end result is well worth it...
