Hi,
A VPS is a Virtual Private Server. Very basically it's like having your own dedicated server. However this means it is a lot more complicated than standard shared hosting, you need to be familar with using Linux and the command line.
VPSs allow a much wider control over how you host your website you can configure everything including PHP/Apache. Also you can install software that you would not be able to run on Shared/Free hosting.

thank you very much, your answer really helped me..
Well, the VPS plans are great. I like them.
I might take take up if I get some cash. But before that let me ask you guys something.
Is it possible for me to install my own OS or my favourite Linux distro because I don't choose what is being offered? (not preinstalled templates or setups. i have an installation cd which i wish to load.)
Also, how do I shut down and start up my VPS (not the OS power options, like the power button on a PC)?
I am not new to virtualization or linux. But I need to know this because I live in India and you are in the US. So I want to know how the above two activities are done remotely.
Thanks

You are not going to be able to use an installation CD to install your own OS. You will need to select one of the OS's offered, but there are 14 to chose from and you will be able to change OS at any time if you are not satisfied with your original choice. I personally use and recommend Centos. Is it possible for me to install my own OS or my favourite Linux distro because I don't choose what is being offered? You will be given access to your own VPS Control Panel where you will have the ability to modify and control basic functions of your VPS including shutdown, boot, and reboot. I am unaware of any other means of controlling power on your VPS.Also, how do I shut down and start up my VPS (not the OS power options, like the power button on a PC)?
