I agree, it would place more of a strain on an already strained server.. I'd also agree to wait it out, and see what the future hold in store for us all.

Well I would not expect the administrators and all of the staff to manage this.

I would think that there would be people who are already active on the

forums but are not staff as of yet to moderate these things out of the

shear will of being called an x10 volunteer.

For example you pick someone out of a hat. They are active on the forums

and see about 10 posts of spam from someone. They send the name to

an administrator that looks into it and then takes care of it.

Yeah but there will be so much spam there will need to be about 5000 volunteers! Might aswell just make two forums: Spammers forum and non- spammer's forum. Then those of us who want to use the forums for the right reasons don't get all our threads filled with spam, and the spammers get free disk space and bandwidth! Everyone will be happy! just like in my: http://forums.x10hosting.com/marketplace/51010-rep-club.html#post296105

You can't say that.

Are you telling me that for an extra 200MB of disk space you are going to

waste 1-2 hours of your life posting?

I'm not saying double thier bandwidth/sql/disk space/and everything else.

Instead maybe just increase it a bit,

By about 10%.

Give the good guys a break is all.

This is a really good idea, and it wouldn't be the first place to implement it. websitesnetwork offers a similar deal, though I'm not sure how they deal with spammers. I think that if a solid anti-forum spam idea were conceived then the staff may be more agreeable to it.

However, I don't think that having more mods will solve the problem. Don't get me wrong, I think it would reduce it, but as someone already said, it would require a truly significant amount of work to police forums and watch for spamming.

Unfortunately, I don't have any windfall ideas of how to prevent or reduce forum spam, and the measures in place are great, but can only go so far. I don't know, maybe a post quota per day or something (though I understand that this too could have some negative consequences).

At any rate the main thing reason for this post was to show that other forums/hosting sites have adopted this concept.

Upgrades when you reach milestones in REPUTATION

I question the underlying premise of this topic. Sure, having a more active forum community can be more fun for those who spend a lot of time here. But, that isn't everybody, and there are downsides too.

First off, it means more resources that have to be dedicated to the forums -- moderators, CPU cycles, disk space, bandwidth, etc.

Second, for those who want "just the facts ma'am", it could make the forums less useful. For instance, I come here just to keep my account from getting suspended, and usually look at the announcements and feature requests, plus maybe the Marketplace. That's about it. If you started rewarding people for lots of posts, there would be a lot more misplaced junk getting in the way. This would not be easily avoidable; it would take a human moderator to see that it is misplaced, and move it, exacerbating problem #1 in the worst possible way.

What to do instead?

There is already a reputation system in place here. I haven't looked at the details, but perhaps it could be used for this purpose. X10 could award upgrades for reaching milestones of being helpful. This is not at all the same thing as being active; it's much harder and more, well... helpful. :dunno: I know there are many who disagree, but personally I'd much rather have a low volume and high quality of posts, than tons of dreck.

If you DO want to go with just volume, though, a 30-second reset sounds waaaay too low IMHO. It would be trivial to have a spambot delay that long. Maybe per day. Say, isn't there already an extra batch of credits for one's first post each day?

Are you sensing a pattern? If you want to design a new car, you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

I think this is a very good idea from you Loneua.
But I don't know whether they can afford to do all that can they?

Also what sort of things do you count as being spam? Would it be like a one word post saying 'Cool!'??

Hey Guys,

I Love you service but here is some constructive criticism.

When you reach 250 posts you should get an option:
More Diskspace
More Email
More MySQL Databases

Then again at 500

And again at 750.

I think we would gain a better amount of active members that way.

Just a thought. Thanks for reading.

I believe this is a very good idea, but should be put it after the server editing or w.e they are doing that makes our servers go down and this can cause a lot of problems.

Do you want to moderate the forums? Mind you this is a job that pays nothing and all it does is give you the ability to report a post. 200 posts can be made under an hour through just spam and if a post time limit were put in then what is the point of having an active community? If everyone here active the forums would be like a giant instant messaging window and the post time limit would hinder that.

I know you say you want to see this community more active but why do you want it more active? So you can later complain about how your "issue" on the free hosting thread is never resolved? More activity leads to the moderators banning and deleting spam threads instead of them doing what they have to do, which is answering our questions about our hosting. This forum is here for one thing and that is as a means to provide support for our hosting, it isn't here so that we can go to the arcade and see who can get the highest score on the chopper game.

Everyone wants it to be more active.

Just say you have a problem,

I can tell you that I would rather have it fixed in 1 Hour than 24-36 Right?

Also, x10 gives an amazing free service. Wouldn't we want to give something

back, A.K.A Ad views? The more Ad-Views the more they make, better,

happier service to us as well. I am going to paid now mainly because I want

to support this great place. I would have to think that everyone else would

be the same right?

Credits don't quite pay the bills. You'd get more for free, the servers become even more stressed by the added bonus of people getting the upgrades ... and less money comes in - because then, why go paid if you get all these neat features for free?

i know that :p

its not like "300 gets you a gig of harddrive space", but in a sence, the more credits you have, the more active, helpfull you are, so it could be

1000 credits gets you, lets say 10 MB increase in space,
1200 credits gets you, lets say, 100 mb increase in banthwich.

it was an idea. but i can also understand how that would add stress to the servers.

But you could go paid just if you like the service, and even though the free hosting is more than i need, i would go paid because i love you guys.

Guys, this is a kick ass free webhost, what more do you want from them?!

Upgrades via credits is great, for you, but who's paying the bills? It's gonna add much more stress on the servers. And then no one would go paid if you can get this all for free....

I vote against this. And comon, 1gig of space for a smallish sized banner, can't you do that?

Wow for once i finally can agree with a member. People fail to realize the work that us staff go through to help keep your sites up and running. We do this all for free. We try to get to your issues as fast as we can and i admit that sometimes some posts get over looked (especially during major issues) and i for one apologize for that. Like what was mentioned in this post. Adding a spam fest to gain credits would end up killing decent support. I think for the amount of members we have and the amount of staff we have we offer the best free hosting support out there on the web.

I agree though making the forums more active would just increase spam and slow down the support. Thus creating unhappy clients. That is not what x10hosting wants. We want to keep customers happy, whether you are on a free server or a paid server. We try to give as much support to everyone as we possibly can.

I would just like to thank those who do appreciate what we do for them. I know the Staff love hearing feedback it makes them feel good and it shows that what we do is not just wasted on selfish people who could care less what happens to x10.

So as long as we have you guys needing hosting we will continue to provide the support wherever it is needed. :)

I won't read all the posts, there are too many.
As you all know, posting is not required to have an account in x10hosting. People who post are the ones that like helping other people, and we really appreciate that.
For posting you get CREDITS, which you can then change for an x10Reward.
