Great!

So that should clarify for people that it's safe to click on any of the search results it produces, & then browse from there in the forums as normal.

The user can even enter passwords into their x10forum page at a later point, without fear that they might still actually be within the site's "fake" page.

It's not a fake site.. when its done typing in the textbox, it just redirects you to the forums.. check the url in your address bar..

If there are any flooding issues i will make a php script that limits searches..

It's just "fake" in the sense that the screen capture is made to resemble x10's Search page, but actually isn't! After that moment, it's all genuine pages again!

By the way, sorry, but I just added to my last post after you posted that. I can't stop myself from tweaking things all the time! ;)

Edit/Added :

OK guys.....

A situation came up on another thread, as I knew it would eventually, where a member queried zapzack's use of the new tool to post a link to Search, rather than him just posting the answer itself.

Because it raises an important point which I don't want to be overlooked, I'm going to repost my response, below. Some of what I wrote should perhaps go on the new site (along with my other suggestions, posted here earlier) so that the tool is used wisely/sparingly, & doesn't annoy people for no good reason!

Quote:
I think (you are both) making good points.

Whilst this new "make them use search" link is a great tool, it is important not to over-use it. We don't want to put off new members, by giving them unfriendly responses when they're not really called for. I only envision this tool being used when the original poster of the question is being blatantly lazy, should know better, or when their question/answer is long & complex & has only just been answered earlier in the day on another thread (this happens all the time!)

On the other hand, it is actually a rule of the forum that members must Search before posting ;

http://forums.x10hosting.com/news-announcements/20551-x10-commandments.html

...see rule #3.

So people are within their rights to ask the poster to use Search, especially when they know that the question has been answered many times before. When I ask people to search, rather than just answer their question myself for them, it is usually based on this time-honoured proverb ;

“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”

Hehe.

I'll do a shorter post this time. 2 more ideas to add;

1) Add the proverb “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime” to the front page of the interface somewhere. It makes a good motto, & explains why the tool is useful.

2) Make it so that the links, once generated, are automatically highlighted, ready to go into the user's clipboard. I also like the idea of adding the motto I mentioned, just after the link, & highlighting it at the same time. That way, the user can copy the link & motto in one go, & paste them both into their post. Thus, the victim gets to read the link & the motto, starts wondering why it's there, then clicks the link, & all is explained!

This would be a feature unique to zapzack's site, & one which lmgtfy.com hasn't come up with.

What do you think? :)

The theme just needs changing a little to avoid copyright problems. It can still resemble the theme though.

The point is, this new site is not trying to fraudulently pass itself off as x10, it is only displaying how to use the search box - so I personally can't see why any company would have reason to take issue with it. The front page/interface isn't using any theme at all. Note how this is different to lmgtfy.com, which does use the Google theme for it's front page/interface as well, with potentially far more copyright issues than zapzack's site. Only the page used in the link effect needs the x10 theme look-a-like, & that page takes the victim straight to x10 anyway, where the actual theme is used for real. So I can't see how it can make any difference really, if the theme is copied a bit.

And as I suggested earlier, we should even include on the front page/interface links to x10forum, to the original search page, to this thread for feedback, & a referral link to x10.

So no harm is done & if anything, x10 can only stand to gain from our site!

I'd just go ahead & get tweaking, if I was you ichwar. :)

Good idea zapzack. That way we can still move forward, whilst still waiting for the hopeful green light from x10.

To be honest, though, I still don't think that using a few horizontal bars of colour & a bit of text can constitute copyright infringement. They don't own the worldwide rights to that! It's not like the whole page needs to be copied.

The idea is grate and, I believe, efficient.

As for the design I happened to have something that might help. I'm making a personal web based bookmark manager and my main page is quite simple (like Google or one you need). It's as simple as it can be but looks quite good (I think). I just started thin project and I don't have ready-to-use template but if you're interested I could help you implement it.

Tell me what think think.

P.S. I can make a logo too :biggrin:

We got permission from CompleteVB.com but we must place a link back to completevb.com on this page that uses the theme..
