VPS Noob question

Hi I have purchased a VPS server..Where do I go to login and start using installing things like apache mysql and what ever else needs to be installed to start using this service..

Sorry maybe a noob question but i goto my services all i see is a username and pw..

Where do I actually go to set this up?

Hi,

You will find the VPS Control Panel at http://control.x10vps.com/. However to install software on your VPS you need to access it using SSH (A basic SSH client is included in the VPS Control Panel, but I recommend you look at PuTTy http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ )
You will need a good knowledge of Linux commands to be able to properly manage your VPS, but most are quite easy to pick up, and there are many tutorials online.
I also recommend you take a look at WebMin http://webmin.com/ which is a web-based system for managing a linux system, including installing and configuring software.

I have used WebMin as well as the WebMin addon Virtualmin for a long time and it greatly simplifies server setup, maintenance, and day to day operations. Webmin is free. Basic version of Virtualmin is free. Read information on Webmin website carefully before getting started. Webmin needs to be installed on a "fresh" server containing nothing more than the installed OS of your choice.

Yeah I need a vps because I can see my website growing..

I do have knowledge of using Linux as i have installed this on my ps3 and used it on my ps3..
also I use VMware player as a router for packet redirection on some wifi connections.

But regards to VPS im a little confused.. I dunno how to access a visual user interface or anything to start installing apache and what not..

I have tried logging into Kloxo and for some reason everything i try in login does not work., So im stuck,.
I installed the ssh and used some basic linux commands which i know.. But still dazed lol.

What is the best OS to install for speed... and easy to maintain. I only need it for a forum and a gallery.

Did you try logging in at http://control.x10vps.com/login.php ?
This should get you to the VPS Control Panel where you can select the hostname - manage - and then you will be directed to a panel with a number of options for managing your server.

I have tried logging into Kloxo and for some reason everything i try in login does not work., So im stuck,.

I did not think that x10 was using Kloxo anymore - somebody correct me if I am wrong about this.

That is all you get in the way of a GUI with the VPS service.
With a fresh VPS setup a user will need to start by selecting and installing the OS of their choice and then install LAMP using SSH / Putty or install a system such as Webmin which will take care of most of the LAMP setup for you.

Before making any attempt to diagnose the specific problem, did you start with a "fresh" VPS, (nothing on the server other than the OS), and what OS did you install?

Ubuntu 9.04 I have tried on a fresh installation.. No matter what I do its just not working :'( I keep getting that error all the time.

O.k. Managed to install it.. now when i try and access it from my browser i get

Okay.
When I first started setting up my VPS I wanted to use Ubuntu because I had it installed on my PC and was familiar with that OS. I had a few problems with that myself and after much frustration decided to go with Centos due to the fact that is seemed to be more compatible with Webmin. Due to that I am not well versed on setting up Webmin on Ubuntu system.
However, I did some checking around and I did find this

which has a lot of information about Webmin on Ubuntu and if you go through the thread you will find some helpful information on the problem you are currently experiencing.
Hope this helps you out a little. If not, just post again and either myself or somebody else will absolutely try to help you work through this.

O.k. Im in Webmin... Now how to get my domain working on there lol.. also to create and FTP... Wow there is so much in there I didnt think it would be this difficult.

Webmin makes dealing with the server setup and configuration much easier due to the fact that you have a GUI to work with. However, you still need a good working knowledge of how to configure the various servers and services.
If you need to make the process of setting everything up even simpler I would suggest that you consider installing the Virtualmin addon for Webmin. Once you get that working you can simply click "create virtual server" and Virtualmin will do most of the setup for you.
I would also advise you to read all you can on Webmin and Virtualmin before getting too far along and I would also suggest setting up and "tinkering around" with your first domain before adding a lot of web pages or email accounts. If everything gets totally screwed up you can simply take note of your mistakes, delete the messed up domain, and start over.

.. your system is not ready for use by Virtualmin.

How do I do the requseted and what do I actuall put in Maps?

This is one of the situations where Ubuntu does not get along with Webmin / Virtualmin as well as one would hope.
Take a look at this:

As I have previously admitted, I am no expert with Ubuntu and Webmin / Virtualmin, but I will attempt to help in any way I can.

It is complicated and you will, no doubt, have many questions and make many mistakes, as I did. But, in the end, the learning process and the satisfaction of knowing that every aspect of your server works because of your own hard work, make it worthwhile. IMHO.

Hmm I did as follows on desian notes but still no resolution on the problem i was having with the postfix maps..

I have no idea.. I am only using what I though best.. I can change if need be and work with something that does work and is easy, efficient and works fast

EDIT:
o.k. found the edit for that section now I get a different error ...

The Read User Mail module is not setup to use the Postfix mail server. Either adjust its module configuration to match, or change the Virtualmin configuration

Well, here is something I have done many times.
Copy the error message, in this case
"A problem was found with your Postfix virtual maps : No map sources were found in the Postfix configuration"
Possibly add "+virtualmin" and "+ubuntu" to the end of the search term.
and paste that into Google. In this case you will want to look for search results which contain the words "virtualmin" and "ubuntu".
I did a real quick search earlier and came up with the link I gave you but you will find many other search results, one of which will probably work. You will probably just have to spend some time digging around.

I completely understand your reasoning for going with Ubuntu. I originally did the same thing myself. And I am very sure it will work, just might not be quite as easy as other OS choices. Don't abandon Ubuntu simply because you are having some difficulties and I am not as helpful as I would like to be in this case. Many other very knowledgeable users and staff here who may offer better advice in a little while.

Yeah I think I will wait.. I have come so far.. I dont wanna start again from fresh now..

I also wanted to know how i could configure Pound.cfg and use that with ubuntu aswell.. would it be possible that i could set up a wifi device to use the virtual private server as a default router and connect to the local host on packet redirect?

Just a thought it would be very usefull for me.. And would take away the means of using the VMware Player i use on my computer now if it can be replaced with a server. Thankd for all your contributions and hard work.. Most appreciated.. I am willing to learn. Plus I want to..
