i bought a new mobo a month ago. i installed everything myself. the computer started fine nd was running fine till yesterday when it all crashed.
yesterday i pressed the power button nd moved to other room for nearly 10 mintes. When i came back the monitor was showing something very weird. Like some codes or signs or symbol which were blinking randomly. vibrating in a similar way it vibrate when we see screen with a video camera.

I quickly pressed the reset button. Nd from then my system isn't taking boot. It gives continous short beep which is a power error according to mobo mannual. processor fan spins normally. Power nd hd lead glows constantly.
Now according to mobo mannual a psu of 500w of more is recommended but i have a psu of 450w. Is my psu creating problem? If it is psu that causing problem then why my pc worked fine for a month?

---------- Post added at 05:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:19 PM ----------

when i start my pic without ram it gives 9 long beep.

Can you give the mobo details as well?
Certain times it is because of the net load is more than the supplied.
500W means you are using a quad cord processor and is that from AMD?

when i start my pic without ram it gives 9 long beep.
It is common if RAM is removed the PC beeps.
I hope the problem can be solved but as always if 500W is the power rating 550 and 650 W is the recommended SMPS.
Its strange that it worked with 450 W SMPS which might now be gone anyways because it was subjected to heavy loads.
Now you need to check the MOBO using a separate 550 SMPS and then make it clear that it is safe.(it has warranty anyways)
Then if it is safe and still not functioning when put with 550 W, change the RAM to another slot..
if not working even then, exchange RAM PCB with another working RAM..
After all this if the PC is not functioning, you can send the MOBO to the manufacturer.

Knowing your system specs (including the model numbers of each of the parts) would help us to understand what the issue is, and if a 500W PSU is really needed. What you're describing almost sounds like a video card artifacting issue, and the beeping is signifying an inability to initialize the graphics card. Power issues will cause both issues that you and I mentioned.

mobo: gigabyte g31m-es2c
cpu: intel dual core 2.8 ghz
ram: hynet 2 gb ddr2 800 mhz
hd: seagate 80gb

one thing more i would like to tell. i use this pc for my home experiments on computer hardware and software. recently i tried to install ubuntu server edition along side windows xp. The cd wasn't at good condition so the installation failed in the middle. I had to abort the installation nd remove the cd. Then i inserted ubuntu (not server edition) nd installed it. During installation it was showing that two of my drives are already filled with server edition file. But i didn't care to format it and was using my pc with rest of the space. As i don't know how to install drivers in linux i was using my pc without any driver. I don't think that such things can break my pc but still telling u if they could.

This configuration does not seem to be so demanding that it would overload a 450W SMPS.

When you try to boot your machine, do you see the fan spinning, and the hdd and DVD drives making their characteristic sounds, accompanied by flashes from the front panel LEDs? If so, most probably the SMPS is working. However, if you can get your hands on a multimeter, try measuring the output voltages on the hdd power connectors to find out if it is supplying power or not.

Hope this helps.

Yes fan spins, drives make their respective sound. Both front panel led glows but they don't blink as usual. Nd i don't have a multimeter so can't measure the voltage but i have one more psu/smps nd same problem with that psu as well.

Remove the CMOS battery from the MOBO.I suspect a bios problem.Put the CMOS battery again after a minute or so.(few seconds is enough anyways).Ensure cooling to the CPU to be at the best you can.Now if MOBO's bios settings are intact, you should be in a position to go into bios atleast. If bios is done, then need to check others. Also try RAM in another slot...by the way do you have another RAM ?
I wait until you Revert Back...

I had removed the battery nd inserted it again after 5 mintes. Still no display. But two major changes occured.
1) no more beeps
2) dvd writer led not blinking nor it opens when button is pressed.

from "no more beeps" i mean no beep at all. not even a single small beep.

You might want to consider nabbing a copy of this which will allow you (if it's not hardware and actually is software), to help diagnose your issue as the distro loads in the computer's ram instead of the computer itself. It's a great way to get around a lot of issues like this. I hope it helps... And honestly, I didn't read every post... =P

I did also forget to ask, are you by any chance using the Integrated video (Probably an Intel GMA) that the motherboard comes with, or are you using a dedicated video card from NVIDIA or ATi? If you're using the onboard video, your Power Supply I would imagine can still be fine in terms of usage. If your PSU especially has a rated constant load for 450watts but has a peak of say 600 watts, I would imagine it should be fine. Most manufacturers, even video card manufacturers tend to overstate the wattage suggested, for a good reason of course. Often times you can get by with a lesser PSU for the short term, but running a PSU near 100%, especially those cheap ones that will never hold a consistent power flow will result in troubles down the road.

"Power Error" for a motherboard can mean a few things besides the Power Supply failing. Could also mean there's an issue with the motherboard as well with power not getting to a point where it should be getting. Often that is caused by overloading the motherboard in terms of power (such as a malfunctioning USB device). This I have seen happen when a device is drawing too much power than what the motherboard was spec'd for. It would slowly burn away at the power pathways until it gets up and fries. Often times when this happens, the system immediately locks up hard. It may or may not reboot depending on what happened though. I would definitely check over your motherboard for any unusual signs in it (for anything that looks like copper/burnt copper), especially on the rear of it if your mounting plate isn't blocking the view.

my pc was showing all signs that u have told. yes m using integrated video card. there were two devices attached to my usb. first is printer (its perfectly alright nd no fault) second is bluetooth dongle. there was something strange with that bluetooth device. the light in dongle didn't stop glowing even if i turn off the pc. it stops only when i cut the power supply to pc. second thing odd was with my cd drive. it seems that it was hardpressed to read any disk. i ignored the issue thinking cds were defective but now m realizing that cds weren't defective but there was some problem with the optical drive. Third strange thing was that whenever i have tried to install the bluetooth driver with dougle plugged in the cd wasn't detected by the drive and whenever i've tried removing dongle it was detected. I will check for burnout tomorrow nd let u know. Btw if my mobo is damaged becoz of psu and bluetooth dongle will the warranty be ceased?

---------- Post added at 09:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:26 PM ----------

the system was slow and hangs time to time. i started using the printer nd bluetooth device just few days before the system crash. nd yes it hangs most of the time (not always) when i click on turn off so i have to turn it off forcefully by cutting the powersupply. sometimes even after successful turn off the system was scanning for errors during next restart.

What I suggested doesn't load any software at all. It forces the computer to boot the CD rom, which loads up in the RAM... bypassing the computer altogether. I dunno, whatevs.

The situation is more worst than my imagination. I think some of my pc components are defective and therefore my mobo fries after some days or after some months. I gotta figure out those components. It not just to start the pc using some bootable disk.

Well, if the mobo is frying, then it's having far too much electricity pumped through it, perhaps it the power supply that's the culprit... Sometimes it's the simple things that are the root problem. First step in troubleshooting: Never, ever, ever overthink the issue. Oh yeah, and ensure everything's plugged in ;)

i would go for not just a new power supply but a new system. this sounds like more than a mortherboard and by the time you figure it out you will have already paid for a new system in parts go for the system.

I remember you saying that its a new Mobo.
Brother,you have warrenty..right!
Just let me know if you are in a position to use it.This is what it is
I know that you already know it.
Many kind members and X10 support members are trying hard to help..But I feel by this time I would have called Gigabyte support and held fort.
Not to demean you or other forum members but its only that you could not get the problem solved agonized me too.
Call Gigabyte support brother.
By the time follow the advices given by above members too..
Good Luck.
