I've changed my DirectAdmin passwords a number of times now (after successfully logging into the portal) and the change seems to take (for some time); but then I try logging in again sometime (weeks) later and the only password that works is the original password. What am I doing wrong here?

Every time you login through the portal (which is the recommended way as it is what will keep the account marked as active) there is a synchronization that sets the DirectAdmin password to be the same as you use to login to the portal, thus reverting it to whatever you have for that login.
Garretroyce's suggestion will change the DA password permanently as well as change the password for the portal login.
