FileZilla is the best FTP client on the market which is free. However uploading through cPanel (HTTP) is faster for me.

I use my laptop for the majority and that is Windows 7. 2GB of RAM is sufficient for that.

I like Windows Live Messenger and Steam. They are both very good for being secure and in some cases customisable. Plus all my contacts use them which helps!
