@above poster: .jar have nothing to do with javascript. They are Java Archives, Java source code, which must be compiled by the Java runtime environment to run the program they contain. Javascript is used for browser scripting and end with the .js extention (most of the times).

Get the JRE from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com:80 to be able to run .jar files which target the PC. J2ME (mobile edition) files will not run.

What is VMWF? If you mean VMware Server, then yes, it is free.

have vlc media player or kmplayer been added to the list/recommended yet?
and as for other software tuxguitar is a good score composer/editor for windows and linux; very similar to many non-free composition programs.
and for operating systems i suggest adding puppylinux. it is quite user friendly and is very small and fast for being so fully featured. as for system tools; i use smart defrag. for anti spyware i use ad aware se personal. there are some very good free flight sims like leos flight sim and flight gear. video conversion; i use WinFF all the time. it's very easy and very powerful. frostwire is a great free alternative to limewire and has a built in bitorrent client. linux multimedia studio(LMMS) is a great cubase alternative. other than those, i would say you have just about everything covered.
