Thats the error message I get when I try to install Mambo Open Source! Should I go ahead and delete the .htaccess file nd images?

As a safety precaution, I would say, no. Create another directory, give it a subdomain, and install Mambo there. Have the main domain redirect to the subby.

wow it was just .htaccess and a empty directory, could have just deleted them and saved yourself some work... oh well..

Yeah but don't you need your .htaccess file for passwording directories or does it automatically get created????

nope it will recreate its self normanly or safe it on ur pc if need problems come back.
