I believe hacking is just the art of information. Hackers generally believe information belongs to the people, therefore they use their skill to try to enforce their beliefs.

there are different types of hackers the one most of them just want to hack into a system leave a mark and then go just to prove they can there also whitehat hackers who hack companys to show them where the sircurity is flawed and there grey hat which do both and there blackhat hackers which hack just for distructive purposes

It dependsonthe typeof hacker, hacking to learn or prove that a system is insecure are morally justified after all there is nothing wrong with the persuit of knowledge. However the ones that hack to either destroy, obtain personal information or to steal are just plain criminals and should be treated as such.

To hack a computer just so you can say you can is IMO very different to hacking in order to get information on people and to put that informationto use in other ways.

Does that make sense to anyone lol:biggrin:

It's one thing if you work for the company and they pay you to make sure that the company is as hack proof as possible, but that's not the everyday hacker. I know one hacker that hacked into the school computer to change his grades, Was that morally right? Is it morally right to hack into a site and look at private stuff? Whether the intention is good or not, it's still violation of one's privacy. That is also morally wrong. Besides pointing out a person's flaws if they don't ask your opinion is just plain rude. That's the same as telling someone how to raise their kids, they won't take kindly to it, whether it's good advice or not.

i think hacking is morally not right
but we can learn freindly hacking that which helps us to increase the security of our website or workplace
there are many websites which teach about freindly hacking
there you will be learning hacking you own website
and testing its security
hacking is morally wrong if used for a purpose that cause damages to the people

Of course it is morally wrong, with the exception of those businesses that are hired to test security.

Hacking is a skill in one person. He/she can use it for good or she/he can use it for bad things like breaking into government systems & private websites. Whenever a person knows hacking he/she should use it in good things.

Hacking is like data mining its a grey area in computing... depending on how it is done it can be good or bad... the main thing is if the hacker damages or changes the systems that they break into... that of course is not cool... and of course depending on how it is done it can be illegal or completely legal... I mean if someone leaves their front door open and walk in and say Hi is that breaking and entering...

I think that hacking can be wrong if its used to hurt someone or destroy a computer/server. Otherwise if it is used to help someone fix something on their pc its fine. I've hacked my friend's pc to install something on his PC and fix it.

There's a big difference between hacking and cracking.

Illegally getting inside or logging into someone's system isn't called hacking. It is called cracking someone's system.

Hacking is a totally different thing. Hacking is changing something's behavior. If I change how firefox works either by fixing a bug or introducing a bug, that's called hacking.

If I change how my forum software works, this means I hacked it. If I gain illegal admin access to someone's forums, it means I cracked the forums.

There's a big difference in meaning between the two words.

in the computer world yes... anybody who writes code is a hacker... however to most people outside the computer niche there is not difference...

I'm a skilled hacker by many definitions of the word, and I'm offended by how ignorant and innacurate some of the things posted here are. Do I belong in jail bc I have a master-level hackthissite.org account and reported flaws in drive protection, and for having over 100 hack-tools on my Palm Pilot? What about hacking my PSP to put an N64 emulator on it? I can hack down a tree also. The word has many meanings and categories, don't make assumptions about people.

To me hacking is no different than someone breaking into my home and going through my possessions. Should I thank them for showing me how vulnerable my home is? Should I feel good about them taking my credit cards, silver, etc. because now I know that there are holes in my home security? I think not.

WELL SAID !!! I agree 1000% !!!

So, if this is true then you would be fine with someone coming to your house and trying to enter your house. As long as they point out that you left the door unlocked, it's okay... even if they take your home porn collection in the process (not that you have one, just an example)?

That's unlawful entry no matter how you try to "spin" it and ya better hope I'm not cleaning my shotgun when you walk in uninvited to tell me my door's unlocked.

Its morally wrong. You cant peep into others things. But there are ethical hackers who try to test the system for any security flaws.

Well put, can't agree more. But also, hacking is a misused word and don't make assumptions about people when they say they are a hacker. But feel free to make assumptions about a person when they say they hacked you to show you your vulnerable.
