I've been running this site for about half a decade, but I've just finished rebuilding and 're-aiming' it.

Whatle (rhymes with bottle) 'sits somewhere between a decent broadsheet newspaper and the blog phenomenon.'

A large collection of authors 'provide intelligent, humorous and insightful pieces' and everyone else reads them.

What d'you think?

Nice that you have been doing with the site for 5 years
Design is nice and not enough posts for a 5 year old site means that the rebuilding is in progress..am I right?
Nice idea. The site is loading a bit slow on all the browsers.
Time to load the home page was 4.2 seconds on a 100Mbps connection.
Parallel comparison is Google loaded at 0.12 seconds on the same PC.
You need to optimize the site for performance as well as SEO
Wordpress has many many plugins to compress the Css and javascript and a simple search in the admin plugin page will do it for you.

Gaaaagh!!!!!!!!! thought I was having a migraine attack lol

Lose the moz/webkit shadow effect for two reasons.
it looks bloody awful in FF and does not actually work in IE

Ditch the typekit font embeder script and do it properly with eof and/or ttf font files held onsite, this will improve the loading time considerably.

Look at adding a lightbox script, never dump a vistor into an otherwise blank HTML page containg just the image.
